Probiotic Uses And Probiotic Side Effects
There has been increasing interest in the subject of probiotics over the course of the last decade. Generally recommended as a complementary or alternative form of medicine, more people have become interested in trying probiotics out, as a greater number of people are branching out into these types of medicine.
Probiotics are often recommended to help treat the negative side effects of taking antibiotics. This is appropriate, as the term “probiotics” means “for life”, which is exactly the opposite of the meaning of antibiotics.
There are microorganisms found throughout the body that play a role in the overall function of the body. The most bacteria are found in the human gut. These good bacteria are important to have in balance to keep the digestion and other functions of the body running smoothly.
Taking antibiotics is not the only thing that can throw off the balance of bacteria in the gut. With the presence of a harmful bacteria, yeast, parasite or fungi, the levels of these important “good bacteria” might be decreased, much as they are during the use of antibiotics. In either case, an increase in these beneficial bacteria can bring positive results.
Probiotics are often taken to counteract some of the infections or bacteria that can be found in the gut, in hopes of reducing the symptoms that those bacteria bring. Infective diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal infections, some skin infections are all brought on by harmful bacteria in the gut, and probiotics are often recommended by nutritionists to help combat these bacteria.
Probiotics are also believed to help in boosting the immune system, relieving stress, and even lowering cholesterol or aiding in weight loss. The use of probiotics is generally considered to be very safe for all of these things, but some feel that there are probiotic side effects.
Most potential probiotic side effects are mild and only related to the digestive tracts. These probiotics side effects may include gas or bloating. However, there is theoretically the possibility that probiotics could cause infections that might need to be treated with antibiotics. This is especially true for those with underlying health conditions. Other possible probiotic side effects include over stimulation of the immune system, unhealthy metabolic activity and gene transfer.
The probiotics side effects have not been proven, much as the health benefits of their use have yet to be explored in depth scientifically. However, as more and more people are experimenting with this form of medicine, it is becoming more and more clear that the negative side effects are few and rare and the health benefits that come from taking probiotics can be great.
With the number of probiotics purchased tripling in the last decade, it's likely we will see an increase in research or at least in personal testimony to the benefit of probiotic supplements. As these come out, there will certainly be increased information available about the possible probiotic side effects.
